A Message from the Director
Welcome to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, managed for NASA by the California Institute of Technology. JPL undertakes the robotic exploration of the solar system for NASA. But we are not bounded by our own planetary neighborhood. The Voyager 1 spacecraft, the world's most distant traveler, is moving ever closer to the edge of our solar system. JPL-managed telescopes, on the ground and in space, are peering into the cosmos beyond, studying distant galaxies, searching for Earth-like planets and learning more about the origins of the universe.
The backbone of this exploration lies with NASA's Deep Space Network, also managed by JPL. This international network of antennas supports communications between distant spacecraft and the Earth-bound teams who manage them.
JPL missions also turn a watchful eye on Earth, with instruments and sensors flying aboard NASA satellites so we can expand our knowledge of our home planet. Technologies developed for space often have applications on Earth in medicine, communications, safety and more.
Please use this site to join us in our explorations.
