He attended the Citadel before joining the United States Army, where he served as an infantry soldier and then became an Airborne Ranger/Pathfinder. As a non-commissioned officer for more than 20 years, he sought to enhance his knowledge by taking every mission offered. While serving as a drill sergeant in Columbia, he went to classes on his off-time and attained an Associates Degree in Science from the University of South Carolina. After many deployments, he was sent to work with the National Guard in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where he completed his Bachelors Degree in Geology from the University of Southern Mississippi. In 2004, Bruce retired from the Army as a Master Sergeant in the Infantry with two Meritorious Service Medals, seven Army Accommodation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, the Army Occupation Medal six Army good Conduct Medals, a Presidential Unit Citation, two National Defense Medals, an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star device.

Since his retirement from the US Army, Bruce completed a Masters Degree in Secondary Education with Emphasis in General Science from the University of Montevallo and soon began teaching eighth-grade pre-algebra at Rudd Middle School in Pinson, Alabama. Shortly thereafter, he began teaching at Thompson High School. During his first year at Thompson, he was awarded the Teacher of Promise award from the Alabama Science Teachers Association. In 2008, Bruce accepted an assignment with the US State Department to work in Liberia in their project of Security Sector Reform. Today Bruce is developing an aquarium system to enhance the ability of students to work and understand the unique systems of balance that must be maintained in order for Earth's oceans to survive. This project will hopefully inspire conservation of resources and the need for continued oceanographic research.
