I
grew up watching with fascination every launch in the
race to space in the '50s, the ensuing manned space
flights, and the Apollo missions. After moving to my
current position as a high school science teacher I
found myself getting to share my enthusiasm for space
exploration with earth science and biology students.
I instituted an astronomy program, including an astronomy
club, biweekly star parties, astronomy classes, and
a summer astronomy program for our community.
The
curiosity and enthusiasm of our young people as they
explore the realms of our universe is inspiring. I encourage
the students to be lifelong amateur astronomers and
gently nudge those with particularly intense interest
toward studies and careers in space science. My greatest
satisfaction comes from knowing I've opened their eyes
to a vast world they can enjoy the rest of their lives.
