Joseph M. Hilbe, Ph.D., is an emeritus professor of philosophy, University of Hawaii, and, since 1992, adjunct professor of statistics, Arizona State University. Prof Hilbe is an elected Fellow of both the American Statistical Association and Royal Statistical Society, as well as an "elected member" of the prestigious International Statistical institute, headquartered in the Netherlands. He is also a member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the Bernoulli Society, and the Planetary Society. Since 1997, Prof Hilbe has served as Software Reviews Editor for The American Statistician and is on the editorial boards of five academic journals. He is author of several texts in philosophy, three "best seller" texts in statistical modeling, and a number of book chapters, encyclopedia inserts and journal articles. He has developed several new statistical procedures which are now found in commercial statistical software.
Aside from his academic interests in philosophy and statistics, Prof Hilbe has been interested in astronomy since childhood. He has continued to keep current with the newest theories in cosmology, astrophysics, and planetary science, and is a working participant in the Galaxy Zoo project, for which members classify previously unclassified galaxies. Prof Hilbe is also an ardent collector of meteorites, having several lunar and Martian stones, as well as example stones from every major classification of meteorite. He currently has over one hundred meteorites in his collection, and enjoys giving presentations related to them to community groups, science classes, and interest groups.
Hilbe's other avocation is track and field. He was head track coach at the University of Hawaii, a many times elected U.S. team coach, and was lead competition official at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Hilbe was a world ranked sprinter during the 1960's, and was also an Olympic Trials decathlete. He twice won the National AAU Pentathlon Championships. Hilbe was a 2007 inductee into the Chico State Athletic Hall of Fame (California State University at Chico).
Prof Hilbe is married with three grown children. He brings a wealth of varied experience to his lectures, and loves to share his enthusiasm and knowledge of space, meteorites, and the activities of NASA with participants.
