Joseph W. Hillmon is an Aerospace Engineer at United Technologies – Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut. Since his undergraduate days at the University of Rochester, Joseph has always kept one eye on the sky in hopes of catching a glimpse of a favorite celestial object, or any an all kinds of aircraft. As a college student employee at the Strasenburgh Planetarium he began working in the gift shop that sold telescopes, astronomy books, and science related items. Eventually, the planetarium director asked him to prepare a 10-minute star show for the main lobby on a topic of my choice. He chose to write a show on Galaxies, explaining the physics behind the various types. I was tasked to write the narration, select the photographs and graphics, choose the music, and program the projection system. The show was seen on three separate 10-foot by 20-foot screens, each showing different graphics. Joseph continued to work at the Planetarium and the School of Science and Man; part-time for the next two years, teaching astronomy and rocketry classes to youth groups, and hosting observation sessions for the pubic at the planetarium‚s rooftop observatory.
He graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering and received a Master‚s degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Joseph's experience as an Aerospace Engineer has involved work on several large aircraft development programs. At United Technologies, he has worked in the areas of Advanced Programs Engine Controls and Externals, and Aero-thermodynamic engine cycle modeling. He frequently speaks to high school and middle school students about careers in Aviation/Aerospace. Joseph is actively involved with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
