I
have been the Planetarium Director at the Fairbanks Museum
and Planetarium for the past 20 years, where our small size
(45 seats) has permitted us to create a unique experience
for visitors. We only feature live lectures, even when we
use programmatic material from prepared shows. More than narrators,
we are the program hosts, able to answer questions and provide
current information. The size also suits our extensive public
education programming, with the ability to tailor each program
to the school's needs.
I
received my BS in Meteorology from Lyndon State College in
1982 while working part-time at the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium.
Since that time I have broadcast a unique weather and astronomy
program daily, called "An Eye on the Sky", heard
on Vermont Public Radio. The program is a weather forecast
of considerable length (3 to 8 minutes) during which any significant
astronomy events are discussed, reaching hundreds of thousands
of listeners. My training in astronomy has been "in the
field" as I develop programs for the Planetarium.
I
also host a children's Astronomy Camp each summer, this year
featuring hands-on use of telescopes over a 5 week period,
enabling young people to see first hand the wonders of the
skies above.
