Mark Helmlinger received a BS in Physics from the California State Polytechnic University in 1991. He is currently employed with as their Remote Sensing Product Marketing Manager. From February 2005 to the end of 2011, Mark was with as a remote sensing scientist and optical calibration specialist as well as a special consultant to NASA/JPL. From 1989 to 2005, Mark was employed by the Earth and Space Sciences Division of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As a calibration specialist and field engineer for the Earth Observation System (EOS) Multi-Angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) and Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) teams, among others, Mark maintained a suite of custom instrumentation and analytical software for deployment to remote sites worldwide. Mark as researched, designed and implemented pre-launch characterization and on-board calibration systems. He has implemented several ground truth field campaigns for the in-flight calibration of space and airborne sensors. Mark is uniquely experienced with the operation, methodology, maintenance, and analysis of the instrumentation used in vicarious calibration and product validation activities. During his travels around the world, Mark has consistently taken time out to explain his understanding of science and its importance in circumstances ranging from casual conversations to school and community group visits.
