Michael Sibbernsen is the Special Projects Facilitator for the NASA Nebraska Space Grant based at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Nebraska Space Grant is part of NASA's National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. It was created in 1988 to help facilitate and fund higher education programming, student fellowships, teacher training, and research in space, science, and engineering-related fields.
As Special Projects Facilitator, Michael creates and provides aerospace related activities such as, but not limited to, public and private star parties, various space-science teacher training workshops, K-12 and higher education rocket workshops, high altitude ballooning classes and experiences, RockSat programming, meteorite programs, telescope training and lending programs, solar astronomy and solar telescope lending programs, and solar energy workshops.
Michael has a Bachelor Degree in Physical Science, with a Minor in Physics, and is currently working with the University of Wyoming's online degree program for a Masters in Astronomy Education. Michael has worked as a Student Planetarium and Observatory Director at the University of Nebraska at Kearney for 4 years, the Planetarium Director of the Grout Museum of History and Science in Waterloo Iowa for 5 years, taught Astronomy Courses at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo Iowa, and during his undergraduate studies, interned at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the Center for Material Science. For the last 30 years, Michael has privately run Starr Entertainment, a multi-faceted company offering various services including performance art, videography, photography, audio-video production, graphical design, live science demonstrations, and creative consultation for television programs, professional entertainers, and science museums. Michael feels adding a little "show" to the "business" of education can be a powerful tool in reaching our youth. Michael is a registered Astronomy Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America, and regularly works with the Strategic Air and Space Museum with their Astronomy Badge Overnights.
