Ray Shapp is now a retired airline captain who flew for a major carrier for 31 years. He has also taught a variety of technical subjects to students as young as grade schoolers right through grad students in college, as well as to kids and adults in continuing education courses and in astronomy clubs, libraries, and museums.
Ray's interest in astronomy goes back to his early teens. As a young man he traveled hundreds of miles to Bar Harbor, Maine for a chance to see the total solar eclipse of 1963. He bought his first giant binoculars to see Comet Halley in 1985.
Since the mid-1990s, he has been an avid member of several amateur astronomy clubs in central and northern New Jersey. Ray enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for astronomy and space exploration with all audiences.
