Why
would an an accountant seek to become a Solar System
Ambassador? The answer to this question lies in yet
another question ... why not?
Accounting
may be how I pay the bills but Space is where my heart
is. I am a member of The Planetary Society, The National
Space Society, The Mars Underground, and several amateur
astronomy clubs. I have been a space activist for over
ten years and I firmly believe that Solar System Exploration
is an essential part of our country and our culture.
If
one hopes to understand a tree (the Earth) then one
must also understand the forest in which that tree exists
(the solar system). If you wish to understand the forest,
then you will need to understand the valley in which
it exists (the galaxy) and so on and so on. Everything
is a part of an interdependent whole and if you wish
to understand any part of that system then you need
to study the system itself.
Contrary
to popular belief, Solar System exploration does not
siphon off recourses that would be better spent solving
our problems here on Earth. In fact, Solar System exploration
is part of the solution not the problem! Basic science
whispers, it does not shout. Like sediments falling
silently in the sea it accumulates gradually and almost
imperceptibly eventually to form miles of solid bedrock
upon which all else is built.
It
is this philosophy that I want the public to understand
and that is why an accountant chose to become a Solar
System Ambassador.
