Susan Weikel Morrison started out as an anthropologist. She participated in one ethnographic and two archaeological expeditions, and worked at an anthropology museum for four years.
After receiving an AB in anthropology at UC-Berkeley and an elementary teaching credential at California State University East Bay, from 1971 to 2006 she taught various K-8 grades and also adults as a bilingual English Language specialist. In the last half of that career, she also was the science and gifted program coordinator for her school.
After retiring from teaching, she continued to take courses in space sciences, paleontology, physics, and marine biology while working as an Education Program Specialist at a technology Center in Atwater. She coordinated and facilitated a NASA grant-funded GEMS Space Sciences program taught in over 40 fifth and eighth grade classes in Merced County. She trained the teachers, visited the schools, taught demonstration lessons, wrote a monthly information newsletter to teachers, and monitored/tabulated student knowledge growth results. She also created a number of space, earth, and life sciences hands-on museum exhibits.
After the center closed, Susan facilitated the distribution of its science exhibits to seven museums in Central California. She has continued to teach lessons about the Solar System and space exploration to 5th and 8th grade classes in Fresno, Merced, and Stanislaus Counties and has created hands-on exhibits highlighting NASA's space exploration activities at local-area museums.
