Biographical Information:

Photo of Ambassador Terri McManus Terri McManus is a science educator currently teaching space and physical science to elementary students at Williams Science and Fine Arts Elementary Magnet School in Topeka, Kansas. Mrs. McManus feels extremely blessed to have the position she does as "I love to teach and I love space. I do two of my favorite things all day. How lucky!" She believes in using whatever science teaching method works, but her personal favorite is inquiry. "I believe students learn best when they are actively engaged in what they are doing. More than following directions for a lab, students must be thinking and making decisions about the material they are learning. Students learn science by doing science." Mrs. McManus is a member of the Solar System Educator Program, a nationwide network of educators trained by Jet Propulsion Laboratory/NASA offering training for classroom teachers about JPL missions and providing them with hands-on, inquiry-type activities for use with their students. She was awarded the "Taking Up Space" Award by Mission Home for her achievement in the advancement of space and has participated in the NASA Educational Workshop for Elementary School Teachers (NEWEST) and the Cassini Educator Fellowship programs. Terri is an amateur astronomer with special interests in constellation myths and occultation timings and has published an article, "Occultations and Small Bodies," in the Occultation Newsletter. Terri and her husband, Craig, served as Secretary/Treasurer for the International Occultation Timing Association, a world-wide group of astronomers, for 12 years. She earned her BA in Psychology from Colorado Womens College in 1976, and her teaching certificate and endorsements from Michigan State University in 1978 and 1979. In December 2004, she earned her MS in Space Studies from the University of North Dakota. Her major interest areas are human factors and space education.
