Tom Madigan's father was instrumental in fostering and nurturing his interest in astronomy in early childhood. When he was 13 years old and with the help of his father, Tom built his own backyard observatory, complete with dome, to house a 6" telescope. In the spring of 1973 his father took him to his first meeting of the Astronomical Society of Long Island, which met then at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. The Planetarium would become Tom's home away from home for the next ten years. It was first a place to go to learn about astronomy and as a focal point for his involvement in the ASLI, then as a place of employment as associate astronomer, lecturer and technician.
Through the years, Tom maintained that same child-like fascination with the universe and his place in it. That same enthusiasm and yearning to learn more has never waned. He jumps at the opportunity to share it with anyone willing to listen with the hope that one other person can be inspired to glance skyward, to look upwards and become connected with that infinite vista that's over their head, a cosmos to which they are deeply and profoundly connected at the most basic level. That passion for astronomy has increased and has caused Tom to pursue an advanced degree in astronomy. He teaches astronomy at three area institutions of higher learning; and, at the same time, he currently is enrolled in a Masters program with the ultimate goal of earning a Ph.D.
