First image is a 10 minute (600 second) second exposure of Comet Hale Bopp started at 06:05:43 EST on 3 February 1997. Taken through a red filter. SBIG ST8 CCD image, taken at the prime focus of a 12 inch f5 maksutov telescope. Image has been flat fielded, and gamma and contrast scaled in using Mira.. Image dimensions 31 arcminutes (long right ascension axis) by 20 arcminutes (short declination axis) During the exposure the camera was guided on the motion of the comet, which means that the star images are trailed.
Second image is a 10 minute exposure (started at 04:56:42) through a green filter has been processed by subtracting a 5 by 5 median filtered version of itself from the original, to reveal structure in the outer regions of the coma.
Third image is 5 minute exposures through red, green and blue filters were combined to make the left colour image; the right image has been unsharp masked to reveal structure.
