Comet Hale-Bopp, 1998 January 4th, a mosaic of 2 60 sec exposures processed to show the faint tail ( dust particles in the plane of the orbit, made visible as we pass through the plane and see it edge-on ) which extends well off the frame in both directions, the lower extension being the anti-tail. A false-colour palette has been applied. Field size is 22' X 23'.5 and North is up. Notice that no one died from CO gas poisoning as we passed through the plane, as had been predicted by some. Taken with a 25cm Newtonian and HI-SIS 22 CCD from Loomberah NSW Australia.
