Observer: Gregg Geist
Location: Austin, Texas
Date: February 15, 1997 11:40-12:58 UT
The following picture was drawn from memory of observation done February 15, 1997 at 1140-1258 UT from a reasonably dark streetside site east of Austin, TX. Observations were done with a 6 inch f/8 Orion Dobsonian with 25mm Ploessl eyepiece. The view is as on the sky, not in the telescope. I have not drawn background stars because I cannot recreate their exact placement from memory. A "diameter" of the coma drawn through the nucleus and perpendicular to the long axis would be about 20 arc minutes long. The assymetric arch structure of this thing is amazing. I spent a good hour looking at old favorite comet pictures from the last centuries finding impressive drawings of Donati's comet and others that look like Hale-Bopp.
