Pic du Midi Image of Comet 1996 B2 Hyakutake
27K
Observers: Jean Lecacheux
Location: Pic du Midi Observatory, France
Date: March 10, 1996 03:39 UT
First detection of a jet
For this image we used the ASTRIANE camera build with a Thomson 7863 CCD
device at the Nasmyth Cassegrain focus of the 105 cm telscope of Pic du
Midi Observatory. The exposure time was 20 minutes. This image is the
result of substraction of two narrow pass band filters (fwhm = 10 nm) in
the red part of the spectrum. Then the dust continuum is removed. The jet
position agrees with the rotational period derived from february 19th
observations. North is up and west is on the right.
The comet was at 0.515 UA from the Earth.
