The first image of Hale-Bopp was taken with an 8" f1.5 Celestron/Epoch Schmidt camera while the second image was taken with a Pentax 6x7 camera with a 90mm lens.

50mm lens mounted piggy back on old Tasco refractor and hand guided. Camera was set at f2 using Fuji 800 film for an exposure time of 2 minutes. The foregroud rocks were lite up using a small flashlight for 4-5 seconds to bring out the foreground surroundings.

This 0.3-second exposure using the NSFCAM system was in a narrow band around 2.25 microns in the near-IR, and covers a region 75 arcseconds on a side. To bring out the wide range of details in the dust whorls, this image using a logarithmic intensity mapping. North is at the bottom, east to the left.
