This image is a composite of eighteen 60 s exposures of the inner 7 arcmin of the coma of Comet Hale-Bopp, taken in blue light (Johnson B filter with polarizers) between 02:24 and 02:56 UT on April 16 with a Photometrics CCD camera (Thomson 512 chip) on the 0.4 m telescope at Limber Observatory.
The image was processed with an unsharp mask to emphasize the "arc" features, then displayed with a lookup table derived from a Gaussian histogram to reduce the difference in brightness between the inner and outer regions of the coma. The blue tint is artificial.
