The inner coma of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at 11:34 UT, March 4,
1997. North is up, east is left, and the field of view is about 7
arcmin square. This pseudocolor image is a 60 s exposure through a
Bessell B (blue) filter with a Photometrics CCD camera (Thomson 512
chip) on the 0.4 m f/12 telescope at
Limber Observatory.
At the distance of the comet, this frame spans 430 000 km, or about
three times the diameter of Jupiter. One pixel on the CCD is about
840 km, or 42 times the estimated 20 km size of the comet's nucleus.
