No, this is not the surface of the moon, or kryptonite or radioactive plutonium -- it's a scene just north of Pierre, South Dakota. This is a view of Hale-Bopp over the jagged ice shelf piled at the face of the Oahe Dam by fierce winds from a weekend blizzard. The luminous greenish-blue color was produced by the fluorescent lights on the road across the dam. This was taken at 10:15 CDT on April 7, a 15-second exposure at f 2.8 on Kodak Royal Gold 1000 film. Wind chill factor - minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit.
