This reversed image of Hale-Bopp was taken on 5/4/97 from Red Rock Canyon, CA. This is one day after the comet crossed the plane of the solar equator where the sun's magnetic field exhibits large amounts of irregularity. Note the 'forking' of the ion tail further from the head of the comet. 8" f1.5 Celstron/Epoch Schmidt Camera.
