Galileo - Countdown to Ganymede 29

1795 days 7 hours 10 minutes
since Jupiter Impact

These images are all SIMULATED views of the Galileo spacecraft. All of the images shown here are computer generated and are automatically updated every 5 minutes. Clicking on any of the images below will bring up higher resolution versions of the images. All images are shown in spacecraft time (as opposed to Earth receive time). One way light time from Jupiter to Earth is currently about 50 minutes.

Overhead View of Jupiter

The blue line is the Galileo spacecraft's trajectory. The orbits of the four Galilean satellites are also shown (from the center, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto). The Sun and the Earth are towards the top of the image.

Overhead View of Earth & Jupiter

The orbits of the Earth and Jupiter are shown here, and they are moving in a counterclockwise direction. During solar conjunction, the Sun gets in between the Earth and the Galileo spacecraft and severely limits communications with the spacecraft, and data playback has to be suspended. The next solar conjunction period runs from April 28 to May 17, 2000.

Galileo Millennium Mission

The next satellite flyby will occur on Dec 28, 2000 when Galileo flies by Ganymede. This encounter is referred to as Ganymede 29 since it will occur on the 29th orbit since Galileo entered orbit around Jupiter in December 1995.
