Pioneer 11 Images of Io

Pioneer 11 was launched in April 1973 and flew through the Jovian system in December 1974. These are the best images of Io taken by Pioneer 11. Pioneer 10, the twin to Pioneer 11, did not obtain any images of Io.

This is the only good image obtained of Io by Pioneer 11. This image was taken over the north pole of Io, and a orange coloration is visible. The image resolution is 357 km/pixel with a phase angle of 67 degrees. The image on the left is a color composite. The image on the right is the same image enhanced by computer processing.
