Image taken on 6/26/96.

This false color image of the Great Red Spot (GRS) reveals cloud-top heights (high, thick clouds are white; high, thin hazes are pink, while low-altitude clouds deeper in the atmosphere are blue).Scientists have spotted what seem to be thunderheads-bright white cumulus clouds similar to those that power thunderstorms on Earth-at the GRS's outer edges. These images provide new evidence that thunderstorms may be an important source of energyfor Jupiter's storms.A closer view of the thunderheads can be seen in the two black and white images below which are enlargements of the boxed area; the right image was taken 70 minutes after the left.Arrows show where clouds have formed or dissipated in the short time between the images.
