Image taken on 6/29/96.Volcanic hot spots and auroral emissions glow on Jupiter's moon Io in the false-color image at left, taken when Io was totally eclipsed by Jupiter. This the first time that hot spots have been imaged at such high resolution on Io.The Voyager image at right shows the corresponding volcanic features. This eclipse image shows at least five hotspots, including Pele and Marduk. The Pele hot spot is more than 20 times as intense than the others, perhaps because it is a site of active volcanism.
