IMAGES OF EUROPA, GREAT RED SPOT, VOLCANOES ON IO DUE
Remarkable new Galileo spacecraft findings about Jupiter's frozen moon Europa,
Jupiter's Great Red Spot, and the giant sulfur volcanoes on the satellite Io
will be revealed at a televised NASA press briefing Tuesday, August 13, at
11 a.m. Pacific time (2 p.m. Eastern time) originating at NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA.
The briefing will feature discussion of the new results by members of the
Galileo science team and will be carried live on NASA Television. Several
new color and black-and-white images and a video clip highlighting Galileo
imagery of Europa will be released.
Highlights of the briefing will include new insights into:
- Europa, a cracked, frozen world largely made of water ice, shows dramatic
evidence of activity that has melted and reshaped its surface.
- Jupiter's swirling Great Red Spot -- which is actually a gigantic hurricane
as big as three Earths -- shows new details of its structure to Galileo's
sensitive camera.
- The most volcanically active body in the solar system, Jupiter's moon Io,
is being constantly resurfaced with new lava flows.
NASA Television is available through the Spacenet 2 satellite on transponder 5,
channel 9, 69 degrees west longitude, frequency 3880 Mhz, audio subcarrier
6.8 Mhz, horizontal polarization. Two-way question and answer capability will
be offered from NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C., and other NASA centers.
Images and information on the mission will be available electronically through
the Galileo home page at
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/galileo.
