TODAY ON GALILEO

November 2, 1996

The official encounter period for the Callisto 3 orbit begins today at 8am PST, while the spacecraft is 3 million km from Jupiter. The commands to run the first half of this 9 day encounter are already on board, but this afternoon, the commands that run the last 5 days will be sent up and stored on Galileo's computers. (Signals sent to and from the spacecraft will take 46 minutes to arrive.) Late in the day, the UVS (Ultraviolet Spectrometer) instrument will make measurements of Jupiter's aurora and the Io torus.
