TODAY ON GALILEO

November 3, 1996

Measurements of the Io torus by the UVS instrument on Galileo continue this morning. UVS measurements make up the bulk of the observations today, focusing on Europa and Jupiter. Europa measurements are to determine the surface properties, and to observe the lower part of its atmosphere for ultraviolet airglow while in Jupiter's shadow. UVS will take measurements of the hydrogen Lyman-alpha radiation in the equatorial region of Jupiter for 4 hours, pausing to observe the star "Spica" and the Io torus for comparison. Around mid-day, the imaging camera will photograph Callisto's "Asgard Basin" in 5 colors. At the end of the day, the Radio Science experiment will start 20 hours of gravity measurements of Callisto, continuing through closest approach tomorrow morning. This data will give us information on the internal structure of the moon.
