THIS WEEK ON GALILEO

November 18-24, 1996

Playback continues this week with emphasis on the observations taken during the third and fourth days of the Callisto encounter. This week's plans shift from observations of Callisto and include mainly observations taken of Jupiter and a few of others.

A large part of the data to be returned contains information on parts of Jupiter's atmosphere near the equator where different belts and storms meet and interact. This information will tell us more about Jupiter's wind and cloud patterns. Also in the playback plans is the return of observations taken during the same period of time as the previous equatorial regions of Jupiter extending from North of the equator to South of the equator. These observations will allow scientists to place the equatorial belt/storm interaction information in context with what was happening on the rest of the planet.

Also returned during this week will be observations containing information about Jupiter's north pole and northern aurora. This set of observations is particularly exciting because they include information from both Galileo's remote sensing intruments as well as fields and particles intruments. This unique instrument coordination will allow scientists to get information that will tie together magnetospheric and auroral activity.

Toward the end of the week, playback moves away from Jupiter for awhile. Plans include the return of images from Amalthea and the first of several of this encounter's looks at Io and its volcanos.
