Swedish 0.5m Solar Telescope Images

A mosaic of 6 images taken on July 18. From left to right: 19:47 UT, 20:29 UT, 21:11 UT, 21:57 UT, 22:39 UT and 23:22 UT. The first two pictures show the G impact site. The following two show G and H, and the last two feature H and F. Note that the images have not been corrected for field rotation.

The Uppsala group, consisting of Hans Rickman, Mats Lindgren, Per Magnusson and Johan Lagerros and also Göran Scharmer from Stockholm are observing the collision events. The telescope used is the solar telescope of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, at La Palma (Canary islands).

The advantages of using this telescope are that it is equipped with a combination of hardware and software which enables us to obtain both very high time resolution 'films' of the effects on Jupiter's visible cloud tops, as well as high spatial resolution (<0.5 arcsec) of the entire disc.
