Explorer One - America's First Satellite

The first U.S. satellite Explorer One, was launched on January 31, 1958. Built by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the spacecraft carried an instrument that detected the existence of the Van Allen radiation belts around the Earth. The Satellite reentered the atmosphere on March 31, 1970.
