Goddard at his Roswell Test Laboratory

As an early rocket pioneer, Goddard went well beyond basic theory research, to work in comprehensive systems engineering - which includes airframe design, advanced pumps, valves, guidance instruments and other devices - and making them all work together. At the end of his life in 1945, he held 214 rocketry patents.
