Microhygrometer for Planetary Meteorology
High-frequency quartz oscillator and thermoelectric cooler used in the JPL-developed SAW hygrometer for fast, accurate measurements of humidity in Earth's atmosphere. The quartz oscillator acts as a highly-sensitive condensation detector as the thermoelectric device cools the SAW surface to the dewpoint temperature. The SAW hygrometer has been flown in various Earth Science experiments, including an experimental balloon-borne reference radiosonde, and the NASA DC8 airborne laboratory. Flights on the DC8 were undertaken as part of a NASA-sponsored multiagency mission to study convection and moisture in Atlantic Hurricanes during the 1998 season (CAMEX3).
