Ion Engine
The 30-cm diameter, xenon-fueled ion engine being tested at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This engine is similar to the one which is currently flying on the Deep Space 1 spacecraft. The development engine pictured has an advanced ion accelerator system fabricated from carbon-carbon composite materials. This accelerator system is expected to last seven times longer than the one on the Deep Space 1 ion engine.
