Did you know?

Microscopic explorers are under development to someday travel through a patient, checking vital signs, searching for disease and curing illnesses.

Can you find the tiny sensor pod amid the toys?
Can you find the tiny sensor pod amid the toys?
Creating smaller and smaller instruments and devices is key to all future space missions. Miniature devices weigh less, take up less room and make missions less costly. We design these microdevices without sacrificing their performance--tiny chips must be able to work as well as the room-sized machine back in the laboratory.

Microdevices and their even smaller cousins, nanodevices, are the wave of the future in space missions. The following links involve these micro and nano technologies, as well as the organizations charged with working on them.

Missions:

Sensorwebs Sensorwebs
A sensorweb is a miniature, independent network of wireless sensor pods deployed to monitor and explore a limitless range of environments.
Cryocooler Program Cryocooler Program
Space cryocoolers are tiny refrigerators designed to cool sensitive spacecraft components to cryogenic temperatures. This cooling is necessary to properly operate the instruments.
Center for Integrated Space Microsystems Center for Integrated Space Microsystems
Learn about the development of miniaturized, autonomous spacecraft and the revolutionary computing abilities needed to put them to work.
