Near-infrared image of te nucleus of Hale-Bopp, taken with the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, at 0507 UT on April 26 (we waited until after sunset only because a computer had to be rebooted). This 0.3-second exposure using the NSFCAM system was in a narrow band around 2.25 microns in the near-IR, and covers a region 75 arcseconds on a side. To bring out the wide range of details in the dust whorls, this image using a logarithmic intensity mapping. North is at the bottom, east to the left.
