Images of Hale Bopp using a CCD camera and a 36" Schmidt telescope.
1. Near infrared image of comet Hale Bopp's central region on April 10th 1997 ( 20H50 UT ) using rotationnal gradient filtering. A series of 12x10 seconds exposures taken in the "z" band ( one micron central wavelength using an RG1000 filter ) was stacked. This wavelength shows the comet's dust continuum. Only a 300x300 pixels subframe of the whole field is shown in this image. The stacking process removes the background stars. Frames taken and processed by Alain Maury. The comet show now a second "wave train" coming from another emission zone. Both are interfering on this image.
2. Near infrared image of comet Hale Bopp central region on April 10th 1997 ( same as above ) using unsharp masking. From the same subframe as above, an unsharp based processing shows the same type of features, but in a slightly different manner.
