Observer: Geoff Simon
Location: Oahe Dam, South Dakota
Date: April 4, 1997 03:15, 05:15 UT
Both shots offer a view of Hale-Bopp over the Oahe (pronounced oh-WAH-he) Dam on the Missouri River upstream from Pierre, South Dakota. The earthen dam, which is nearly filled to the brim with spring runoff, is the second largest of its kind in the world, topped only by the Aswan Dam in Egypt. Both shots were taken on April 3 using 30 second exposures at f 2.8 on Kodak 400 Gold film. The closer view was taken at 9:15 CST, the distant shot at 11:15.
