Galileo Celebrates Its Tenth Anniversary!

PASADENA, Calif. - NASA's Galileo spacecraft continues sending us data about Jupiter, its moons, and magnetic environment 10 years after launch from the Space Shuttle Atlantis on October 18, 1989.

Galileo entered orbit around Jupiter in December 1995, beginning a two-year primary mission. When Galileo's original mission ended in December 1997, it began yet another mission, focusing on the intriguing moon Europa. Capping off the current extended mission are two daring flybys of the volcanic moon Io. Galileo successfully completed its first flyby of Io on Sunday, October 10, 1999.
