Despite the more hazardous terrain in the landing
area, Surveyor 7 lands without incident. In addition to acquiring
a wide variety of lunar surface data, Surveyor 7 also takes pictures
of Earth and performs star surveys. Laser beams from Earth are successfully
detected by the craft's television camera in a special test of laser-pointing
techniques.
Surveyor 7 is the last of its series. All told, the Surveyors acquire
90,000 images from five sites on the Moon and help select landing
spots for the Apollo missions. The next landings on the Moon will
be the beginnings of the Apollo missions.
